How to Measure Your Window for Curtains: The Scatter Box Guide

di Alex Keoghan 23 Aug 2026

Curtains are one of those finishing touches that can completely transform the look and feel of a room. As well as offering privacy and helping to control natural light, they bring softness, warmth, colour and texture to an interior, framing your windows and helping the whole space feel more considered and complete. Whether you prefer a subtle design that blends effortlessly into your room or a more decorative curtain that introduces pattern and personality, choosing the right style is only part of the process. Getting the measurements right is just as important. At Scatter Box, all of our ready-made curtains feature an eyelet heading, making them easy to hang directly onto a curtain pole while creating beautiful, even folds. In this guide, we’ll take you through how to measure your window correctly, how to choose between our available curtain sizes and a few things to consider when styling curtains in your home.

What Sizes Are Scatter Box Curtains Available In?

Scatter Box ready-made eyelet curtains are available in three sizes: 90" x 90" (229cm x 229cm), 90" x 108" (229cm x 274cm) and 132" x 90" (335cm x 229cm). When looking at curtain measurements, the first measurement refers to the total width of the pair, while the second measurement refers to the drop. For example, our 90" x 90" curtains have a combined width of 90 inches and a drop of 90 inches. It’s important to remember that your curtain width should be wider than the curtain pole itself, as the additional fabric is what creates the soft folds and fullness you want from an eyelet curtain. The best size for your window will therefore depend on the width of your curtain pole, the height from the pole to the floor and how full you would like the curtains to appear when closed.

How to Measure the Width for Eyelet Curtains?

When measuring for Scatter Box curtains, you should measure your curtain pole rather than the window itself. Using a metal tape measure, measure the full usable width of your curtain pole, excluding the decorative finials at either end. If you're fitting a new pole, it is generally best for it to extend beyond the window frame on either side. This gives the curtains space to sit away from the glass when they are open, helping to maximise natural light and creating the appearance of a larger, wider window. Before ordering, take the measurement at least twice to make sure it is accurate, particularly if you're deciding between our 90-inch and 132-inch widths.

It is also important to allow for fullness. Choosing curtains with exactly the same combined width as your pole would mean that the fabric would need to sit almost completely flat when the curtains are closed. Instead, you want enough additional fabric to create natural folds across the window. As a general guide, eyelet curtains look best when the total width of the curtains is approximately 1.5 to 2 times the width of the curtain pole. For example, if your pole measures approximately 60 inches wide, a 90-inch-wide curtain pair would provide around 1.5 times fullness. For a wider window, our 132-inch width may be the more suitable option. Fullness is also a matter of personal preference; a little less creates a cleaner look, while additional fabric gives a softer and more luxurious appearance.

How to Measure the Curtain Drop?

Once you have established the width, you can measure the drop. As Scatter Box curtains are eyelet curtains, measure from the top of your curtain pole down to the point where you would like your curtains to finish. Our curtains are available in a 90-inch (229cm) drop and a longer 108-inch (274cm) drop. The 90-inch drop is available with both our 90-inch and 132-inch widths, while the 108-inch drop is available in our 90-inch width. The longer length is particularly useful for taller windows and rooms with higher ceilings, where full-length curtains can help emphasize the height of the space and create an elegant, luxurious finish.

For many living rooms, bedrooms and dining spaces, we love the look of curtains that finish at or very close to floor level. Full-length curtains help visually elongate a room and create a more polished appearance than curtains that finish partway down a wall. Before measuring, however, look at the area surrounding your window and consider anything that could affect the length you choose. Radiators, window seats and furniture positioned directly underneath a window can all influence where you want your curtains to finish. Measuring from the pole rather than assuming a standard window height will give you a much better idea of whether the 90-inch or 108-inch drop is the best option for your room.

Why Choose Eyelet Curtains?

One of the reasons eyelet curtains remain such a popular choice is their simplicity. The eyelets slide directly onto the curtain pole, so there is no need for hooks or curtain rings, making them quick and straightforward to hang. The eyelets also naturally encourage the fabric to fall into soft, uniform folds, creating a clean finish that works beautifully across a range of interior styles. They can feel contemporary when paired with simple furniture and neutral colours, but work equally well in a more decorative interior where pattern, colour and texture are layered together.

Beyond their appearance, curtains offer a number of practical benefits within the home. They provide privacy and greater control over natural light, while the introduction of fabric can make a room feel softer, warmer and more inviting. This can be particularly effective in rooms with large windows, wooden or tiled floors and other hard surfaces. From a design perspective, curtains also give you an opportunity to introduce colour or pattern on a larger scale. A curtain design can pick up tones already found in your sofa, cushions, rug or artwork, helping to connect the different elements of the room and create a more cohesive interior.

The Scatter Box Approach to Curtains

At Scatter Box, we love interiors that feel layered, considered and full of personality. Our curtain collection is designed with the same emphasis on colour, pattern, texture and quality that runs throughout our wider home furnishings collection. This means your curtains can become the starting point for the entire room or the finishing element that brings an existing scheme together. All of our curtain ranges have matching cushions available, making it easy to carry the same design from your windows through to your sofa, armchair or bed. For a more layered look, matching cushions can also be mixed with plain and textured designs in complementary shades, while colours from the curtain can be picked up more subtly through a throw, rug, piece of wall art or decorative accessory.

When choosing your curtains, take a moment to look at the room as a whole rather than considering the window in isolation. If your sofa and larger furniture pieces are relatively neutral, the window can be a great place to introduce a little more pattern and personality, with matching cushions helping to bring that pattern further into the room. If your space already contains stronger colours or patterns, you can use the matching cushion more selectively and layer it with simpler, tonal pieces. The aim is to create a space that feels coordinated without everything needing to be perfectly matched. By combining curtains and cushions with complementary colours, patterns and textures, you can create a cohesive interior that still feels warm, relaxed and full of character.

Meet Our New Calla & Clover Curtains

Our new Calla and Clover curtains are the latest additions to the Scatter Box curtain collection, bringing fresh pattern and character to the home while remaining easy to incorporate into a variety of interior schemes. Both designs feature our practical eyelet heading, combining a beautiful decorative finish with the simplicity of ready-made curtains. Designed to work alongside the wider Scatter Box collection, Calla and Clover can be paired with complementary cushions and accessories to create a complete look or introduced into an existing room as an easy way to refresh the space.

Calla

Calla offers an elegant way to introduce pattern to your window while maintaining a sophisticated overall look. Rather than matching every element within the room, pick out one or two tones from the curtain and repeat these through your cushions, throws or accessories. Clover brings its own distinctive character and can be used to add interest to a neutral interior or layered into a room that already embraces colour and pattern. Both styles demonstrate how changing your curtains can have a much bigger impact than you might expect; because curtains cover a significant visual area within a room, a new design can instantly make a familiar space feel refreshed.

Creating a Complete Look

Once your curtains are in place, consider how they work with the rest of your soft furnishings. Scatter Box cushions, throws and rugs make it easy to repeat colours and introduce different textures throughout the room, while lighting, wall art and accessories can provide the finishing details. If your curtains feature several colours, you don't need to use every shade elsewhere. Choosing one or two tones and repeating them in smaller accents is often enough to make the scheme feel connected. Mixing plains with patterns is also a great way to prevent the room from becoming too busy while still creating depth and interest.

Curtains can also help establish the overall mood of a space. Softer colours and natural tones can create a calm, relaxed atmosphere in a bedroom, while richer colours and more expressive patterns can add warmth and personality to a living or dining room. Whatever style you choose, think about how the fabric interacts with the other materials in the space. Combining curtains with tactile cushions, a soft throw, a textured rug and carefully selected accessories creates layers that make a room feel more comfortable, welcoming and finished.

Ready to Choose Your Curtains?

Before ordering, remember the three key measurements: the width of your curtain pole, the fullness you would like and the drop from the top of the pole to your desired finishing point. Measure twice, exclude the finials from your pole measurement and remember that your curtains should be wider than the pole itself to achieve attractive folds. With Scatter Box curtains available in 90" x 90", 90" x 108" and 132" x 90", you can then select the size that works best for your window and the look you want to create.

Beautiful curtains are about much more than covering a window. They frame the view, soften the room and provide an opportunity to introduce colour, pattern and texture into your home. Whether you choose our new Calla or Clover curtains or another design from the Scatter Box collection, styling them alongside complementary cushions, throws, rugs, wall art, lighting and accessories can help you create an interior that feels considered, comfortable and uniquely yours.
